From L. Palestina, the name of a Roman province. In Greek it's Palaistine and Hebrew it's Pelesheth "Philistia, land of the Philistines.

I believe that the name Palestine comes from the name Philistines, which itself comes from the word Pelasgians, the 'sea' (pelasgos is sea) people who invaded the area from Greece under pressure from the Indo-European migrations of 1800 B.C. or so.

FYI it's pronounced "felestine" in arabic. i know "tine" means dirt in arabic, no idea what feles means. Faulty arabic but enough to know that
