The League of Nations was created prior to WW2 but after WW1. The main reason that it failed was due to America, the country who most strongly advocated a united Europe, refused to join. Wilson was voted down and the European countries who had chosen to enter the League had only really done so at the urging of Wilson. When America chose not to join the League floundered and really accomplished nothing other than handing Hitler Eastern Europe on a silver platter.

The League of Nations (LON) was the post WWI international organisation proposed by then US President Woodrow Wilson's 14 Points at Versailles.

It caused the war indirectly due to several reasons:
1. Weakness of the LoN - unable to prevent the provocative actions taken by Hitler which eventually led to the outbreak of WWII (eg. reoccupation of Rhineland, Spanish Civil War)

2. Main members of the League, Britain and France, adopted its own Policy of Appeasement towards Germany instead of taking firm actions in the position of the LON, which later resulted in the invasion of Poland.

The League of Nations was actually created after World War One, in reaction to the autrocities the world witnessed during that war. It's aim was to prevent such a war ever occuring again.

Unfortunately, it was ineffectual in preventing the outbreak of WWII, and collapsed.

The League's replacement is the UN

The League of Nations wasn't even proposed by Wilson until the very end of WWI. It didn't cause the war, it came after it.
