How were individuals affected during the tumultuous era of political change in which the Revolution of 1911 brings an end to the millennia-old imperial rule in China. How did Chinese citizens perceive change in their everyday lives? There are many themes of continuity and/or discontinuity at the turn of the 20th century-- many involve imbedded Chinese customs. It covers seemingly familiar subjects such as child abuse, foot-binding, abortion, female infanticide, human trafficking, opium smoking, prostitution, concubinage, funerals, weddings, and official corruption.

Would it be wise to argue whether politics were the main force affecting most peoples' lives? That is to say, did political changes in China during the late imperial period, or early post-imperial period, affect Chinese lives more?

I seem to remember that a very stuck-up minister in England was balking at either Newton or Harrison and said that there was nothing new left to discover. Maybe, even, it was years after?
