I'm intrigued by writers who were ... odd, or who died tragically. Emily Dickinson, for example, always wore white and rarely left her room; Edgar Allen Poe and F. Scott Fitzgerald were alcoholics; and Sylvia Plath and Ernest Hemingway took their lives.

So I'm wondering: which writers were truly gifted and which were certifiably insane?

Men hardened by the friction of learning, steel men of savvy quietly applied, crusty ole boys of rough-hewn glory, probably smoke a lonely cigarette in their cells during lunch breaks from court.
1-what do you understand from"Men hardened by the friction of learning"
2- what does "steel men of savvy quietly applied" mean?
Thank you.

I have been reading stories by author Henry James for my own pleasure. What do you think is so unique about James? What about his use of symbolism or viewpoints?

I want to hear them.

My dream is to become a true author as my occupation. I have an excellent manuscript for my first book and like any first time entry, I am finding it very difficult to even get a literary representative to give me the time of day. That's without the agents even reading what I have written. If anyone can tell me what you have done in the same circumstance or if you are a literary agent and want an outstanding historical fiction to represent, then write me back.
I know this is the customary way to start out but hey it's worth a try! :)

Sometimes I think the whole world has gone crazy, but then again maybe it's just me. Everyone wishes for the perfect life. Some people get it, I'm not one of those people. I was sitting on a plane as it soared over the glistening water of the vast Atlantic. London, England is where I was headed. To live with my dad whom I had visited every summer since I was four years old. I'd been to London every summer for thirteen years. I love London, I truly do, but it just isn't the place for me. I don't feel like I will ever get my perfect life, or my happily ever after there. The busy streets, the brain-racketting noises, they're great. Except you get used to them, maybe even too used to them. I really didn't know what to expect in London though I had been there for a month, every year, for thirteen years. Even though it seemed like I had it all worked out in my mind, London was so different from Phoenix.
