I just picked up the new Penguin translation of Swan's Way- I'm wondering if y'all think Proust is a modernist genius or a pretentious cliche.

It is a story about a girl that barely moved to a new town and she goes out w/ the most popular guy in her school even though her parent's said that she couldn't. They are at a party and he starts drinking. They leave and he starts driving way to fast. They wreck into another car and they end up in the hospital. The nurse tells her that the family that they ran into died. The nurse also tells her that she might not make it so the girl tells the nurse to appoligise to the other family's family for her. She also tells the nurse to appoligise to her parents because she shouldn't have gone out even when they told her not to. The girl dies and the doctor asks the nurse why didn't she do that last one thing for her and the nurse says because the people she killed were her parents. I read this story on somebody elses computer and they didn't remember where they got it. Does anybody know what this story is called?Or who wrote it?It would really help if somebody could tell me where to find it!

Hey, Im looking for detailed information on how one becomes a hitman, I won't ask how you know but the reason i want to is im currently writing a book about it and i would prefer it if the character had a little more...background. (no the book is not like Agent 47, though he is bada$$) If you could provide even more, like how they live, what they get for their hits, who they generally deal with it would be even better.

Thanks for any answers you can provide!

*Note that Ive been to that "Hitman - professional killings" or whatever site, thats not what im looking for.

The book was about a girl who goes to live with her aunt (I think) who's husband used to carve them wooden children because she couldn't conceive. The children were named alphabetically up to H, though there was a "girl" child being carved when her husband passed away named Iris, who was buried since she was never finished. The aunt used to talk to the children as though they were alive and it was quite creepy, but an interesting read. The only other thing I remember about this book was that the aunt and uncle owned a country convenience store, but the aunt closed that after the death of her husband. Can anybody out there help me?
