A novel creates an entire world, whereas nonfiction offers only a (quickly dated) nugget. (Certainly, nonfiction has its own, significant merits, but that was not the question asked.)

The situations may be fictional, but the characters and the reactions and emotions are not. By reading, one can exprience others and understand complicated situations in one's own life. I grew up on books. My beliefs about life, my emotions, my behaviors, they're all based on what i learned from reading fiction.
