This is an interesting question! In my opinion, fiction allows us to deal with the human experience in a unique way that is, in some senses, more complete than the experience of reading nonfiction. A novel creates an entire world, whereas nonfiction offers only a (quickly dated) nugget. (Certainly, nonfiction has its own, significant merits, but that was not the question asked.)

Oscar Wilde believed that fiction was vastly superior to nonfiction for reasons similar to what I state above; specifically, he complained of nonfiction becoming quickly outdated. Another interesting perspective on the value of fiction is offered by Azar Nafisi in Reading Lolita in Tehran, in which she relates the (true) story of a group of young women secretly meeting to discuss Western literature. Clearly, fiction was of enormous value to them.

Fiction allows us to view our real world and the darker sides of human nature without social, legal or religious bias. Or doing anyone any harm.

One of the reasons Fantasy and Horror is so popular is because they throw off the restraints society subconsciously put on us. Suddenly we are able to explore an entire world and way of life from a fresh, un-biased view. We don't have to worry what our family or friends will think if we secretly love the fact the bad guy does horrible things, especially when it comes to the grisly details! We don't have to fear "getting caught" when we play the vouyerist and read a sex scene.

Fiction is more than just escapism or exploring our dark side. It often uses metaphor for what is really happening in the world around us.

Good fiction portrays human behavior in a very real way. If characters were not realistic or believable, we wouldn't continue to read. In this way, you can study people and learn from the characters actions; perhaps even see someone you know in a fictional character.

As mentioned earlier, it can broaden your imagination, making you more receptive to ideas.

And again, as earlier mentioned, fiction is a great escape mechanism from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Enjoy it as much as possible.

The situations may be fictional, but the characters and the reactions and emotions are not. By reading, one can exprience others and understand complicated situations in one's own life. I grew up on books. My beliefs about life, my emotions, my behaviors, they're all based on what i learned from reading fiction. You'll be surprised at how much one can learn....wrong from right, how to speak so others listen, how to behave to get what you want, how to respect your parents, how to love your husband/wife, and even how to do work before play. These are vital life lessons that are hard to teach in reality, but that easily enscribe themselves into the thin pages of a fictional book.

Stress release, stimulates the imagination, allows readers to place themselves in others' place, encourages intellectual curiosity, is a painless way of learning about cultures & history, and improves English skills.

Studies indicate that students who read for fun do better on assessment tests, are able to do better in college, and have better career prospects than non-readers.

For me, it is simply an escape. I like a good murder/mystery. I read every night when I go to bed. Fiction takes my mind off the sorry events of the day.

Empathy. You can, of course, read novels and still be a psychopathic megalomaniac. but generally I think books help us crawl inside the skin of how others' think. This should help us be more sensitive caring people. (Of course, it can also just make us better at being manipulative. . .)
