I just picked up the new Penguin translation of Swan's Way- I'm wondering if y'all think Proust is a modernist genius or a pretentious cliche.

Genius. Invest the time to read all volumes of his great work, In Search of Lost Time (often translated as Remembrance of Things Past). You will come to agree.

I'm having a hard time getting into Swann's Way...I'm thinking he is a pretentious cliche.

I think he wrote from the heart not the head.
