I cant' remember where the train was, but that means that they finally realized what was going on, but it was too late for them to escape or resist.

Think of it as us now, with the rising fuel cost, and signs of global warming and plundering protected lands for a non renewable resource without consideration of the non-renewable species that may perish if their ecosytem is converted to a pipeline. We see the signs every day, salt marshes in the east coast of the U.S. dying for no apparent reason, glaciers receeding. We see the bad direction of things happening, but we keep our eyes closed because what can we do? we have enough to deal with paying bills. I think it was like that. They saw it coming, but what can one do? Only when its too late, when all is lost, it is typically human to wait until then.
