I'm trying to get my little brother to read more, and he's reading the very easy chapter books (I Can Read Books). Do you recommend any specific books that I can read with him to get him used to reading chapter books?

He's starting 3rd grade, if you need to know the reading level.

Recently orphaned, Judith Sparrow has no choice but to be taken in by her stem uncle Geoffrey. He agreed to the arrangement with only one stipulation. Judith could bring all her belongings with her, except for anything green. The color green is strictly forbidden in his house. She finds comfort in her new surroundings from Mrs. Hastings, her uncles's housekeeper; and even at times her uncle seems willing to open up to her. But then strange things begin to happen, and her happiness in her new home, and a budding romance with the miller's son, are compromised by the terrifying events that have taken place. But she can't tell anyone about these incidents, because she suspects that these terrifying events may be occurring because of the one possession she kept that is against the rules. Hidden in her mink is a small green picture frame given to her by her mother.
Thats what the book is about.

Has anyone ever heard of this book, 'Lunchtime in Brooklyn' by Rebecca something? It was serialized in Sassy years ago, but I've never been able to find the actual book. Maybe it never got published.

FOG

THE fog comes
on little cat feet.

It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.
It is for Carl Sandburg. What do you think?

I would like some educated input on whether it is better to sit with a good book or watch a well made movie. To make my case I'll throw out some examples. Consider the character "Hannibal Lector", in the books by Harris, you can dismiss him to a degree, Anthony Hopkins' live screen version of him makes your skin crawl with his excellent portrayal of the lunatic anti-hero. My favorite book as a child was "Stuart Little" a wonderfully charming book that was bastardized on the silver screen to make a dollar and so detracted from the original story that it was unrecognizable without seeing the credits. The jury is still out on "Lord of the Rings" as I was captured by the visual beauty of the films but disappointed by the missing material and characters. Any thoughts?

(I read it in elementary school, so my memory's very fuzzy.)

It was part of a series I think, sort of Indiana Jones-ish, with archaeology, and it had the characters going out to the desert and finding this gate or portal(?) that unlocked evil.... There was another book in the same series that had a sort of tribe of Old Testament giants of the earth, or something, also living in the desert?

Please help me find the title, it's driving me crazy!!

firstly, please recommend some up-to-date authors and good examples of their work. I've enjoyed William Gibson, Azimov, Heinlein, Di- Phillip K. Dick, and Harlan Ellison. Secondly (if you're still reading) there is a story I read once; a ship on a long trip. the crew begins to become addicted to tethering themselves to the ship and floating out there for longer and longer periods....ring any bells? Live long and prosper. Nanoo nanoo.
