Hunt For Red October

The Krazny Oktyabr (Red October), the Soviet Union's newest Typhoon class missile submarine has set sail. In command is Marko Ramius, the Lithuanian born "test pilot of submarines." With the death of the Red October's political officer the disenchanted Ramius and his hand picked cadre of officers begin their own mission. A mysterious letter posted by Ramius to the chief political officer of the Soviet Navy initiates unprecedented Soviet Naval activities in the North Atlantic ocean. Red October disappears as Soviet ships and submarines race towards the North American coast. CIA analyst Jack Ryan believes the sub possesses an unusual, nearly silent propulsion system which renders it practically undetectable by sonar. Ryan also believes that Ramius is attempting to defect to the west -- partially because intelligence sources have revealed the Soviet fleet has orders to find and sink Krazny Oktyabr! Finding the sub and determining Ramius' true intentions draws both the Soviet and combined US/UK Navies into the hunt for Red October. Both sides engage in an intricate game of chess played out on, under, and over the North Atlantic as fleets of ships, subs, and aircraft face off against each other while searching for the "lost" Red October. Weapons are fired in anger, and blood drawn on both sides as Red October battles to complete Ramius' mission.

Good luck.

Searching For Red October

On the first anniversary of his wife's death, a soviet sub captain (Markus Ramius) and his handpicked crew of officers plan to take their new submarine, the Red October, to the US so they can defect. They do this without the knowledge of the enlisted crew or the political officer (the zampolit, murdered by the captain as soon as they go underway). The submarine is special, it has a screw-less propulsion system called a caterpillar drive, which makes it almost impossible to detect.

A CIA analyst (Jack Ryan), who ends up being the main hero character in almost all of Tom Clancy's books, is called in to consult when the soviets claim that the submarine commander was crazy and trying to attack the USA. Ryan had met Ramius and knew his background, so he guessed it was a defection and is sent to the US Navy sub Dallas to help the Red October escape the soviet fleet.

The end game: two russian subs sunk in the middle of the mess, and the Americans help Ramius fake the sunking of the Red October. The enlisted crew (minus a KGB plant, killed by Ryan) is rescued and sent back to the USSR. The officers and Ramius are assumed to have died in the Red October, so they are sent to the US to be debriefed. Ramius later ended working as a consultant for the Navy.

You should read the book, it flows just like a movie, and interesting as hell.

The book centered on the theft of the Red October by Captain Marko Ramius. He wanted to turn over the sub to the Americans, and the Soviets wanted to sink him. So they concocted a story that he was going to launch his payload of nukes at the US mainland.

So the hunt was on.

In the end--after a battle with an Alpha-class sub--the sub escapes and the crew is returned, except for those who elected to stay behind.

Don't be so lazy - read the book - reading is a good past time - much better than sitting in front of the TV all evening.
