It's best to have a curtain over a book shelf, because the book in shelter will longer preserved longer and will still new even it is a new book.
I never put my books in the shelf but in the drawer, what amaze me is that the book I kept in the drawer still the same as new, because it didn't expose to the light from room and sun. So try put the curtain over the shelf and open it when you want to read.

Unless they're antique, why bother? Books are the great democratic art form in that they cost very little - if the pages fall out buy a replacement. It's the words that are important not the artefact.

Read them all and keep their contents in your mind.
Granted that you have a huge library for your personal collection. Would you be able to read them all in your lifetime? It is only those pretentious "scholars-to-be" that love to display their wall-to-wall collections of books but who never did read even a fourth of these.
A public library would be better-suited and better served by those collections.

Keep the room dry. Not too warm. Dust the books frequently; every decade will do.

Guard against silverfish and try not to have them in direct sunlight for any part of the day.

Well, you could seal them in freezer bags and put them back on the shelf. That would keep air and moisture out.
