There are a lot of chapter book series at that level that he might like. Here are just a few:
The Magic Tree House books by Mary Pope Osborne
The Secrets of Droon by Tony Abbott
The Dragon Slayer's Academy by Kate McMullan
The Bailey School Kids by Debbie Dadey
The Horrible Harry books by Suzie Kline
The A to Z Mysteries by Ron Roy
There are also a lot of "stand alone" books at that level, but most kids just making the transition like the predictabilitly of series. They may not be great literature, but they are an important step in the process of becoming a proficient reader.
I hope you can find something there, but if you don't your local children's librarian would be glad to help.

I have worked as a manager in a major book store. Kids section was one of my sections!! I love the chapter books entitled "Nate the Great" and there are several in the series. He is a young detective and goes around with his dog solving really 'serious' crimes in the neighbourhood. If he likes those, then at your local bookstore ask what other similar chapter books are available. And even at that age, you can get a more difficult chapter book and start to read it to him. It will encourage him to want to read more, and his desire to go to different places in books will increase!
