(I read it in elementary school, so my memory's very fuzzy.)
It was part of a series I think, sort of Indiana Jones-ish, with archaeology, and it had the characters going out to the desert and finding this gate or portal(?) that unlocked evil.... There was another book in the same series that had a sort of tribe of Old Testament giants of the earth, or something, also living in the desert?
Please help me find the title, it's driving me crazy!!

It might be the "Cooper Kids Adventures" by Frank Peretti. The one you are talking about is probably The Door in the Dragon's Throat.

Peter and the Starcatchers!!!!! great sequence for him! try Inkheart too. I examine the two and the two are sturdy. i think of he will like them. Plz look at them! i think of he will like them. and perhaps Eregon too? be constructive you learn them out! ;) playstation -yet another e book it extremely is short yet candy is Max the powerful- journey, and friendship are the main to this tale. the only ingredient is that the mummy and boy are abused extremely, whether it does not describe something graphicly. i think of it would be ok. very stunning e book desire i helped

It may have been one of Frank Peretti's young adult books, you could try that.
