I've been reading novels that take place in England through out the centuries. I've read book by Anya Seton, Phillippa Gregory and of course Jane Eyre, and now I'm not sure where to go for my next novel...What should I read next?

Need some help finishing this does not have to be long or anything just simple.
A man is addicted to pot, his wife left him,he has no other family, his friend can't help him because he has problems of his own. His car and wallet were recently stolen while he was stoned. He has no money, no car, no home and no family and friends....What does he do???
