I grew up in a private school that excelled in every area but history. For whatever reason, perhaps it was just the curriculum or the history teachers they hired, we just didn't learn a lot about history. For example, I can't tell you anything that happened in the world before Chris Columbus sailed the ocean blue. And I can't tell you anything that happened after the Civil War (and since I grew up in the South, I only really know the Southern side of it). I have no clue about WWI, II or the Korean War or what the hell we were doing in Vietnam.

I struggled through college to keep up with history and figured out quickly I have a real thirst for learning more. With that in mind, I'd really like to check out some great world history books. Can anyone recommend some books that could sort of "catch me up"? I don't want to just know the American, or Southern or Christian side of history. I wanna know it from a unbiased perspective. Any ideas?

Stay away, from the light,
This time, it will end tonight,
I hate the way i feel,
Take away the pain with steel,

Trying to hide this feeling,
They don't know how much I'm concealing,
My heart is broke; A new love i have lost,
The pain is unbearable, my eyes become glossed,

My tears fall hard crimson and dead,
I dare not look what lies ahead,
I feel the blood hot and thick,
I hit the floor and start to get sick,

I grip the note tight within my hand,
Please do not misunderstand,
I love you so much and i always will,
I will never forget the way you made me feel,

Keep me in you heart,
Don't remember the way we had to part,
Some day we will meet again,
But for now this is the end.

I asked a question on Yahoo here:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ArDPmfZhOzEs.5.C.wbEFv7sy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20071031181050AAIQSXX

The question specifically says to read it as satire. The first time I asked the question I removed it because I got answers indicating nobody could tell it was satire. The second time, I made an effort to tell people directly to read the question satirically, and does it make a difference? No. I don't get it. Satire can come in the form of Jerry Seinfeld on TV (not that people can understand it as such) but you try to use it to formulate an interesting question on Yahoo and it's like speaking a foreign language. Why can't people recognize when a question is satirical (which by the way can but does not have to have a satirical answer)?

I am a prisoner to my own heart and soul
bounded by chains of my feelings for you
every time I see you my chains grow longer
its no use trying to break free I'm powerless
i try to reach for you but i fall further
with every blessing there's always a curse
i guess my curse was just loving you

it was your eyes that captured my soul
your glare was one that i couldn't resist
and your looks that captured my heart
now skips a beat at the sight of you
those words that you whispered to me
still make me fall onto my knees
adds weight to these bounding chains

you led me to believe you loved me

Heres another I had written her ....she never read it...but it exists...

Of days gone by...

I remember those full of confusion...among every confliction.

Have I lived?

You are the grace that has lifted me,

and brought me crashing to my knees.

You invoke possibilities...and wonder.

You breathe life through me...

You strive to reach farther from yourself,

Searching for an opening...

You bring me happiness, and sorrow...

You are the infection of passion,

as well as the cure...

You surprise me on every level...

You make me wake up to something better,

realizing my own dreams and desires.

You hide when I seek, and seek when I am hidden.

You are the strongest essense when I close my eyes,

only seeing you...

Your vision is burned into me,

scarring my soul.

This feeling....missing you.

A new vision encompasses,

a better day ahead.

Brighter and more beautiful,

the beginning comes to mind.

This feeling...loving you!

Have I lived?

I am living now, more than I could ever live,

because of you.

Whatever tomorrow holds,

I will stand beside you...

Why is it that:

- Canadians believe that we burned down the WhiteHouse.

- Canadians "won" the war of 1812 when most of the fighting was done by British regulars and First Nations

Why is it that:

- The Americans believe they "won" the war of 1812 (You didn't beat the British out of your land, they left when the treaty was signed - hardly qualifies as "winning"?)

- The Americans believe that they won the "Last battle" of the war at New Orleans, when the last battle of the war was clearly a British victory ("Ten thousand men cannot take it", eh?)

Shouldn't it be taught that:

- The war was a draw, and at worst for the Americans, a minor British victory

- The Canadian militia may have won a few battles on their own, but it was primarily the British and First Nations who saved Upper Canada

- The BRITISH burned down government buildings in Washington, it had nothing to do with Canadians

- The Americans did not win the last battle of the war.

Meh?

Its all a bit strange when you think about it... when you compare it to the likes of india, for whom marriage is more arranged.

west=english speaking countries, and europe ie the liberal democracies.

romantic love=meeting someone and falling in love with them.

(i thought id better put these definitions to stop people from misinterpreting me ^^)
