Railroads and factories. One of the main reasons the South got the shaft in the war, was becasue the production facilities for munitions and most other good they needed for the war effort, were located in the NORTH.

As a result, they never had enough of anything. Not weapons, not food, not even uniforms.

If forced to choose, B would probably be it. But I don't think you can really separate out A and B. Having a much larger population meant two things: having a much larger army most if not all of the time, but also having enough people back home to work those factories and maintain the manufacturing edge that proved so costly to the South.

B. the North had the manufacturing capabilities to make and manufacture weapons, uniforms, etc. needed to supply the troops with necessary supplies and the railroads to move not only the needed supplies but men to various places in the country.
