Considering the definition of comedy (Comedy: a work in which the protagonist overcomes moderate difficulties, often through cooperation with others, thus gaining a place in a group or in society), distinguish between "comic" and "funny." How might a comedy help to purge pent-up emotions, just as a tragedy does?

What contemporary comedies have you seen recently? Describe how one movie, play, or TV show highlights the following elements: comic hero, the role of society, monologue or dialogue, a happy ending.

What does the phrase "much ado about nothing" mean to you? What experiences have you had that illustrate the concept? What might be a complicating incident of the comedy by that name? What do you think will happen with Shakespeare's characters?

Have you seen, read, or performed in any of Shakespeare's comedies? Tell me about your experience.

When I was about 10 years old, in the mid 1960's, I loved 2 book series I have never seen since. One was All Of A Kind Family, about a family of 5 Jewish sisters and their parents in NYC around the turn of the century. The other was called The Moffats. Anyone?

I just finished reading Jack DuBrul's books and his main character Philip Mercer is a mix between Indiana Jones and James Bond. Would make a great movie character! I picture a Aaron Eckhart as the main character and maybe Brian Cox as Harry White.

Ok, picture this, a woman is in a coma due to some major trama, (she has no memory of the trauma and does not realize she is "dreaming")while in said coma, on another plane of existance, we'll call it the astral, just for simplicity sake, she meets a guy and falls for him, etc, then she wakes up, only to find the life she thought she was leading was a dream. She pines. Here's the twist, the guy she loves is also in a coma, in another place. What would be the rules of beliveability for such a story?

I'm a novice but have a GREAT idea for a story. How should I go about starting this novel? What things does a good fantasy/thriller book need to have? What will keep the reader interested? Should I just write as fast as I can with out stopping or write a summary then add to it? Thanks so much for your help with this thing that I happen to NOT be a Know-It-All on :)

I need some help with answering some of the questions.

What things did they see on the way?

Was there anything on the trip that made it longer than they expected?

I am utterly sadened that I had to come here to ask this question. I am searching for a poem that portrays the struggles of african american people, the triumps they have been through. And on this huge device called the world wide web I can find nothing but mushy watered down mess. Of all the people that struggled and fought no one decided to write it down? I know for a fact this is untrue and it is quite distrubing to discover the lack of representation of these engrossing accounts of things that are very much a part of every Americans history.

So my fellow Americans, would anybody be kind enough to either provide:

-names of poems about slavery, civil rights, etc.
-names of african american poets who wrote on these topics
-links to sites that contain such poems

Thank you and your replies are much appreciated.

Former Lover,

Just like this paper, my mind was blank except for your name and a pause...
And now this paper and my mind are filling up the vacannt lines
And instead of my mind asying to my mind "What are you goinng to write Haz?",
It, with its archeological-like tools (this writings) discovered a wonderful find:

As we dig and/or write with vague expectation we find to our large or little suprise
What thing we are the most like
Though it may just be "our" creation
Or some filling of few vacant lines...
Or futile things we write...

The whole scene looked very lonely. I think it was titled "Blue". I think it was some sort of digitally created picture, because if my memory is correct, the guy was silver... I thought that I had found it on Webshots, but if I did, it's no longer there.

I'm really impressed with some of the answers on Y/A - they come from people who really give thought to what they are saying. I guess I shouldn't be so surprised but articulate, thoughtful, well-read, humorous people are a bit thin on the ground in my mileau.
I felt compelled to ask this after reading some of the recent answers in the Books & Authors and History sections. Really interesting!! This is what keeps me coming back.

Why didn't the honest/rich folk just take all the boats and go themselves ? I'd have left this stinking medieval toilet to it's own devices.

"Mars, Bringer of War"

Red to the wrists he smiles, resists
The urge to seek his spoils and runs
Once more to the line, the cattle
Creaking in their old boots and thin
Courage, men now children in the fray,
Hidden behind rusted helmets and
Shaking simple spears - this is no sport
But it will do - quickly he comes and
Darkens their eyes, first with a shadow
And then with a veil drawn by stained
Fingers that smell of dirt and iron,
Hard hands setting throats to singing
With a slit and beating bone to dust
And drumbeats as they split for the
Hammer and the hilt, heavy and low
Sounds from the lowing of the animals
Sacrificed to this angry bloodhand god.

He hurries now, red to the breast and drowning,
Casting away the sword and shield to take them
With his hands, a wave of muscle, rage and teeth
Against mortal fear and humility, the wild eyes
Hypnotic in the moonlight, the long hair loose
And on fire behind him as he forces eyes from
Their round and comfortable caves, parts jaws
Until their breaking booms as thunder, stealing
Language, loose mouths above empty eyes, these
Hopeless, these helpless, a drawn arm from a
Penitent corpse handled and swung, crushing
Throats and forcing ribs through sweaty bodies,
These bones drawn, these very bones, with a need
And a twist in the night he births daggers
For the gutting, drawn down the front while
Useless arms flail and protest, up the groin
And to the breast they run, these splinters
To cool the sunburts hearts and hail winter
With burnt history and the smell of metal.

And their blood it surrounds him, swells to him
A storm of lost potential and steaming life,
Screaming from pools and thick rivulets
That it may bathe him
And stain his skin,
An upwards sort of rain drawn magnetic
To paint his eyes and bless his heart
In celebration of the fallen feast,
A slaughter song silent in the night.

Falling upon full fields they die
They die and bring life back
To their first mother, the hungry
Mistress that she may recline,
And decline, and in time again
Spit fools upon her chest
To nurture, observe,
And consume.

All divinity a hunter, and every man a meal.
