I believe he was a naturalist. He had to many romantic ideals to be a realist. He had a love for the land - not the drawing room.

naturalist, mainly, in Tess, references to Stonehenge, but then out of body exeriences. Not a realist , some kind of devout pagan., anacronistic,never a realist.
