My parents had an extra long window van. Mind you, this was back some 40 years ago, way before conversion vans became popular. My father was a do-it-your-selfer and built it up from gutted to padded bench seats that faced each other with a table between which could be broken down level with the benches to make a bed. We had a refrigerator, plenty of storage under the bench seats and when mom sewed curtains for all the windows, she curtained off the area around the portable potty we also had. We sure did a lot of traveling in that thing! And even by today`s standards, it looked professionally done.

We had a Ford Cortina mark 3 saloon. Red, black vinyl covered top and and a thick black stripe running the length of it. We would all pile into it and drive to Southport from Manchester for our summer holiday. 2 adults, 5 kids and the dog. My dad ran it for years from around 1977 to 1987, when I had to wait in to hand the keys to the lucky new owner and collect £50. By this time we were not allowed in it as the bottom of the boot had to be tied by rope to the top part. At some point my dad installed an alarm that sounded something like the car from 'Dukes of Hazard'. That was one cool car, and i loved it.

A little black Austin 1O with leather upholstery, little orange indicate rs that came out the side, between the doors, very narrow wire wheels, no boot space other then to keep the spare wheel in. Runner boards at the side. A cranking handle for the odd day. Such a little char actor, we named her NELLY BELL.

They just dont build them like that any more.

My grandad had an Austin Cambridge.
Now I've got it. It's been kept in a garage for 2 years, I'm hoping to get it restored one day.
