For all the artists out there: When you are working on a piece (music, painting, book, or anything), do you completely visualize what the piece is going to be when you start? If you're drawing or painting, do you know exactly what you want the finished product to look like before you start? If you're writing a song, do you know exactly what the melody and rythm are going to be before you start playing? Or do you just jump right in and see what happens?

I've been looking at census's, and in one my ancestor is listed as having come from "setmurther" in the 1850s. I assume the census-taker misheard, and wrote down what he thought she said.

Question: Does anyone know of anywhere which sounds a lot like Setmurther? :o)

As illustration of those who come by way of Holy Trinity and those who come by way of Allah, lay claim that:

“In order to understand scared text, one needs to first believe; a person must use their minds and be afflicted with divine intervention.”

The fallacy of this line of argument conceivably be that of the other thousand or so religions, beliefs and philosophies in present circulation, a handful will claim similar conditions to understand their way.

Should this person then not ascribe to all the above belief systems to try to sort the wheat from the chaff to determine the one True belief, and in the process risk being burnt by all the other false beliefs and Gods ?

Are not all authoritative sources preaching one belief over another no different to the transient nature of confetti salesmen ?

Flavour of the month, if you permit, is empirical science backed with rational philosophy.

Kindly refrain, if you please, ad hominem attacks of all parties participating. Thank you.

I am reading it right now and I am pretty much in the beginning of the book, on like the 200th page or so. I am finding myself getting bored since nothing interesting has happened yet. Can I expect it to get better as I keep reading?

I like books with unique storylines.

Previous Books I've liked:
* I liked Lord of the Flies because it was so analytic of human nature.
*I liked Animal Farm and Children's Story because it was metaphoric and political, but the story was weird. Talking animals and Communist Teachers?
*I've just bought Coma by Alex Garland. He wakes up from a long coma and readjusts, but has weird memory blips and stuff happening...then you nor the character knows whether he's in a Coma still, or not.
*Once read a book (The Divine) where the baby refuses to be born.

That should give you something about my interests, but its not limited to that. I don't like Science Fiction, Self Help, Harlequin Romance or Drama type books much and I'm not in the mood for Horror. I'm 27.

Just looking for something that intrigued you lately and might intrigue me. Thanks :)

I have to read a horror novel for one of my classes and I don't know many. If anyone could offer some suggestions for an entertaining, but somewhat easy-to-read, horror novel, I'd really appreciate it. When I say easy-to-read, I mean high-school reading level. (My teacher isn't too worried about it being "school appropriate" so that aspect isn't an issue.) Thanks.

The darkness creeps closer and closer.

Shielding the lambs from the light.

It whispers to them the lullaby

Hush little lambs, do not fear.
I am here young lamb to protect you, you see.

The light shows things you should not see.

It reveals the souls filled with pain.

Pain that should be hidden away.

Pain that wishes to scar your poor young mind.

To steal the innocence that is held so dear.

So listen little lambs and you will learn…

Run from the light and go to the safety of the night.

I was sitting here thinking, and I realized that I am often unsure of who I am. Like there are multiple people telling me to be this way or that way and I don't know which one to let win, nor which one is actually me. And I thought, and I realized that these people, these voices, change often. I am constantly seeing new ways to act, new ways I want to be. And I want totally opposite things at the same time and it is confusing. Where in the mess is my identity?
Here is a rough sketch of my idea:
What if we all have the entire world and every person in it in our hearts, arguing who gets to be us? Maybe that is why we got through phases... we are searching for who we want to be. I think THAT is the purpose of life: Finding the right skin to live in. Sorting out the jumble of ways to live and hopefully finding yourself, discovering the person you were meant to be. It sounds pretty deep, but I think I'm on to something. Just think, the whole point of being here is to discover who we are.

I promise, I will come back and tell you. I will tell you what exactly happens and what to expect when you die.

I can't stand it anymore I want to see what happens after a human dies.

Someone should be brave enough to do it.

I can't wait no longer.

Here is the algorithm:

Use your middle name as your first name.
Use the street you grew up on as your last name.
If you grew up on one of those "avenue F" type streets, use the name of the nearest apartment complex as your last name.

So... tell us your soap opera name and describe the personality of the character.

I'm writing a fantasy novel, so far about half a chapter or so, about 3000 words so far.
I'm using the present tense. Will this cause any problems or are there any difficulties in using the present tense over the past tense? Is it advisable to go straight into the action and then introduce the concept in chapter two or should it be done at the start?
Approximately how many words should a chapter be and how many words should your first book be? Also general tips on writing a fantasy novel is always appreciated. Thank you very much

I'm so frustrated! I have a degree in art, and I took life drawing but had a horrible instructor. I try to draw my friends and family.... the drawings look good, but they don't resemble the person I'm drawing. I can draw other things realistically, and I really want to be able to do portraits too. Can anyone offer some suggestions?

We were having a discussion at work about the effect of violence on TV, on children. I said it doesn't make a difference because people are drawn to violence and have enjoyed watching it for 2000 years as entertainment, but a coworker said that maybe children weren't allowed to go to the Gladiator games? Does anyone know what the audience of the Colosseum was made up of?
