You must ALWAYS warm up your voice before you sing! Try going through scales (ex. do re mi....) or doing an exercise to help articulation (s, k, r, and ch phrases, or sing repetitive phrases such as 'red leather yellow leather' going up the scale) possibly to start. There are many exercises that you can try given by a voice teacher, or online even. The whole idea of warming up your voice is similar to stretching and warming up when doing sports, to prevent the damaging your vocal chords.
If you're looking to train your voice, it is essential to have a quality voice teacher. Some may tell you that it hurts at first "just because you haven't used your voice properly" or somthing similar, but this is entirely false. You should NEVER let a teacher tell you that. When singing, you should not be in pain. Over a while, this can cause you to damage and possibly ruin your voice. Find a few teachers and take them for a "test drive" and stick with the one that seems most suitable. THey should have had a considerable amount of training at a reputable school. After all, this is your voice you are trusting them with!
