I've been looking at census's, and in one my ancestor is listed as having come from "setmurther" in the 1850s. I assume the census-taker misheard, and wrote down what he thought she said.

Question: Does anyone know of anywhere which sounds a lot like Setmurther? :o)

hey Canny Cat,

I used a SOUNDEX calculator to find what might be mistaken for Setmurther, it gave:
SKIDMORE | STAINER | STANNARD | STEINER | STEINROCK | STONARD | STONER | STONEROCK | SYDNOR

Soundex is used for SURNAME usually, but though it might help.
