Does the following, which I wrote a few days ago, mean anything to you?
One day we were asked to think of an object that meant something meaningful. So, I pondered for a moment through the usual things one thinks of... Then I came upon something more significant tome- a cane. A cane was my object of representation:
I remembered my great grandpa, and after my great grandma was delivered into God's hands, he slowly began to lose hope, his health, which was all ready not so great begin to gradually decline, and eventually just leave him. However, he had served in the army, he was, as they called him, "a stubborn old man", and he would absolutely not let his pride go. A cane?!! Absolutely not for him! After a while, he finally picked up a cane and realized that it wasn't so bad. In fact, it helped him out a substantial amount and he was able to let himself rely upon it.
So, when I see or think of a cane, it reminds me that we all have our own pride, but we need to be willing to let that go sometimes. In other words, we cannot live without God. We must surrender ourselves, our time, and our possessions to the Lord. For He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life; No one comes to the Father but by Him.
A cane... Something to help the elderly become more stable as their limbs weaken. Something to rely upon. The cane also symbolizes something else for me. Let's just say for all matters and purposes of this analogy that the cane is perfect, it is utterly flawless- as is God. If the cane does not work it is not actually the cane that is failing, it is us- humans, the people, God's creation. We might lose our grip on the cane, we may slip & fall, but the cane still holds strong.
In other words, we might lose grip with our faith, we may slip and drift away from the Lord. But it is not the Lord's fault, it is our own. We are imperfect, undeserving of His love, but we are so blessed to receive His Holy Presence in our lives daily.
I hope to keep a good grip on my cane, and not let myself falter too much. I wish to stand by it & let the cane guide me.
