In Memoirs of a Geisha, Mother says "We do not display our naked feet like monkeys. This is geisha house, we do NOT peddle flesh here." But then in order to become a full-fledged geisha, Sayuri's mizuage is auctioned off to the highest bidder. Why do they contradict themselves? I know that they can't really be in love and they can't get married or pregnant, otherwise they have to retire from being a geisha, does that have anything to do with it?
