If you are looking to set up your TV for surround sound,on the back of the cable box there should be some sort of audio output jack, either digital or analog (RCA plugs), Just hook up this audio output to your receiver's audio input,(CD,VCR, etc.) Adjust the mode input to the corresponding input and you should have surround sound.
You could also hook up your VCR to do the same thing.

To get Dolby Digital 5.1 from you cable you have to use the optical or coax digital output from your cable box into your A/V receiver. If you are getting DD 5.1 from your DVD player, you are either using its didital audio output that way or it has internal decoding with 6 outputs. If you do not have an A/V receiver with digital input and DD decoding, or if your cable box does not have a digital audio output, you cannot get DD 5.1 from your TV stations. You can get Dolby Pro-Logic (analog surround) if your receivers decodes that from the normal stereo (red/white) inputs. You turn of your TV speakers when your audio is hooked up digitally.

i dont know without being there, but some tvs have a program in the menu you have to select before you can use output.(example-i have a 5 year old rca: it has three settings for output-tv and stereo, quiet stereo,LOUD stereo)maybe if you just start messing around with the menu you could fix it. good luck.
