In Memoirs of a Geisha, Mother says "We do not display our naked feet like monkeys. This is geisha house, we do NOT peddle flesh here." But then in order to become a full-fledged geisha, Sayuri's mizuage is auctioned off to the highest bidder. Why do they contradict themselves? I know that they can't really be in love and they can't get married or pregnant, otherwise they have to retire from being a geisha, does that have anything to do with it?

Must get a better appreciation for Japanese culture. We do not peddle flesh here... translate in this house we don't display the body for attraction purposes. It is quite acceptable to do this elsewhere, but not at that location. Some geisha are for looking and listening, others are for sex.
Why sell the virginity? To the poor man, the supreme geisha must be un-obtainable (sexually) and needs to get sex elsewhere. The virginity is sold, because it can be... and sold for a lot. This is typically not a one day deal, but a extensive length of time contract.
In Japan, everything is for sale... for the right price, at the right time, in the right location.

Please don't believe all you read in Golden's fictional account. Their virginity is not sold off, these are a hugely honourable people. Geisha means artist and all their lives they practice their arts. Yes they can and do marry although they must retire, which is only fair I suppose. They are not prostitutes in any way shape or form, the dance you see in the film s a little exaggerated but the perfection of everything in their performances, whether dancing, making tea, passing a cup, lighting a ciggy for some bloke and pouring Saki is a sight worth seeing. Their movements are all very sensual but not obvious. The costumes themselves have hidden sexual innuendos , one in particular is the red piece of material at the back of the wigs, I will leave that to the imagination. Hope this helps.

Okinawa Soba (Rob)
TERUHA -- Her First Sexual Experience with a Man, and the Ritual of "Mizuage" in OLD JAPAN
This is a photo of Teruha at age 14, when she was either (1) still a MAIKO named CHIYOHA in Osaka, or (2) a MAIKO named CHIYOHA in Tokyo, where she had recently moved to escape her scandalous reputation as "The Maiko without a Little Finger".

She did not become a Geisha (and take the name TERUHA) until she was 15 years old, and working in the Shinbashi district of Tokyo. At that time (July 1911), Shinbashi was considered "....The best Geisha district in all Japan......" ---- a judgement made by men who felt that the Geisha of Kyoto were too conservative for their wild party tastes.

The image captures, with both delicacy and accuracy, the facial lines and trademark expression that later made TERUHA one of the most sought-after Geisha in Tokyo during the last years of the Meiji-era.

Although there were thousands of Geisha, their mark of popularity was determined

i gotta buy a lot of it is overrated, and i agree im guilty of that too, but like u sed, some of the best ever, kool g rap, AZ, Scarface, a lot of theit stuff isnt positive, but theyre some of the greatest. positive hip hop is good though, and a lot of greats do do positive hip hop, like krs one. It also is a little how u define positive hip hop too though. For example, i gave u power by nas is a gritty song but also has a positive message about gun violence and such. Some people try and say LupeFiasco is the best alive cuz hes a positive rapper, and though he has great talent, that is an absurd statement. And also, yeah that song wasnt that great, but not just cuz it was a positive song IMO, there are also many negative songs that are bad, just as there are positive songs that are good. but i gotta agree 100% with you. I think one factor is how u judge a positive song, but overall, IMO its good, but definitly overrated. and gangstarr, lol, ur a funny mother f*cker haha.. i like the way u look at that lol.

First and foremost memoirs of a geisha is nothing but a story. Its not true. But about mizuage, They did it as a right of passage. And yes they could fall in love, they do all the time. But they cant get married because they would have to give up their life as a geisha, but they are always welcome to come back. And accually alot of geisha have children. In japan just about the only socially acceptable time to be a single mother is when your a geisha.

'Peddling flesh' is like being a prostitute. There is nothing wrong being a prostitute - it is just another profession. The only problem is obsessiveness and doing it because he or she has no choice. One has to have passion to be a prostitute. Unfortunately not every prostitute thinks alike. Being Professional is what a Geisha is trying to protray, thus develop that special class or category.

Virginity is another subject - it is a once in a life time, treated separately and irreversible. There is no contradiction. For example; A person can be an artist (drawing pictures, impressions ...etc), yet have sex with someone.

'Geishaing' is about the art of pleasing another for that day - she is yours for the evening or night not necessary for sex.

Your last lines are perhaps, just some of the rules that Geisha follows but not everyone adhere to it.
