When missionaries came to Australia, they saw how Indigenous Australians were living free and unclothed. This was a huge sin in their eyes. Traditional language and culture was discouraged.
Missionaries soon asked the government for assistance. In return, hundreds of missions and reserves were set up throughout Australia for the purpose of assimilating Indigenous people into "White society". The women were raped, children set away to work of farms for little or no wage, and the men were sent to work and go to war despite the fact we were not being classed as citizens a the time.
Today, I am a proud Australian Aboriginal woman who's learning the very same language they took away from us, I feel very proud to speak it as I speak it for the one's who couldn't due to the oppression periods in Australia.
