What is your position is on the use of torture on prisoners 'suspected' of crime. (esp US use of torture on detainees in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay) and why?
I thought that from a logical perspective, it is justfied to some extent because it is the only way to get information fast; however, I also thought that it isn't justified because we will not (and perhaps never?) know whether or not the information forced out of the prisoners (through the use of torture) is reliable or not.
From an ethical perspective, I thought that torturing suspected prisoners can be justified to some extent because the prisoner may be withholding information that may SAVE lives (esp. American lives). However, I also thought that it isn't ethical to torture suspected detainees because it does violate the human rights of the prisoner (and the treaties of the Geneva Convention).
