What is your position is on the use of torture on prisoners 'suspected' of crime. (esp US use of torture on detainees in Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay) and why?

I thought that from a logical perspective, it is justfied to some extent because it is the only way to get information fast; however, I also thought that it isn't justified because we will not (and perhaps never?) know whether or not the information forced out of the prisoners (through the use of torture) is reliable or not.

From an ethical perspective, I thought that torturing suspected prisoners can be justified to some extent because the prisoner may be withholding information that may SAVE lives (esp. American lives). However, I also thought that it isn't ethical to torture suspected detainees because it does violate the human rights of the prisoner (and the treaties of the Geneva Convention).

They wouldn't be detained if there wasn't STRONG evidence that they are terrorists. And if you haven't heard, torture is out--but harsh measures can be used. Personally, if it saves lives--I don't care. And the other poster who said "It also makes torture of US personnel more likely in the future"................our soldiers ARE being tortured already. They have been in the past despite Geneva convention rules and will be in the future whether you admit it or not. War is hell...................

If the government can justify for the first time torture to the American people, it will eventually justify it FOR the American people. They will brainwash the common man and woman to believe that it is a beneficial thing for society to extract info this way from anyone suspected of anything the government does not like.

Why can't people see that the encroachment on our freedom and dignity by the Government will never end as long we allow it to happen???

The fact about Abu Ghraib is that 90% of the "detainees" were found to be completely innocent. These innocent people were subject to torture for months. It's not a question as to what I think about torture. It's a matter of what those innocent people thought, as well as their families and friends. What mindset has that created in the Iraqi people?

the ingredient approximately torture is that this isn't any longer a constructive form of having information many people lie just to make it give up this is a nicely time-honored actuality in case you place a mans testicles in a jewellers vice they'll confess to each little thing from wearing clothing to taking photos JFK. In Anglo-saxon situations that they had trial by using ordeal which replaced into quite drastic yet had the earnings of it being voluntary there replaced into ducking which replaced into like water boarding in spite of the undeniable fact that, in case you floated up - you have been accountable in case you probably did no longer and drowned you have been harmless, then there replaced into retaining a white warm iron and walking 3 steps if the wound healed you have been harmless, if it did no longer you have been accountable my generic replaced into trial by using cake - you had to devour a cake in case you choked you have been accountable if no longer you have been harmless. the subject with people using torture is that for the period of attempting to maintain the moral extreme floor in a conflict against terrorists the reality that torture is getting used is getting used to recruit greater terrorists. exceptionally while the phrased getting used are a similar ones the Nazis used in the 2nd international conflict does not placed usa of america in a good gentle.

It doesn't get you reliable information, and there are plenty of non-terrorists who have been taken and detained for no reason.

It also makes torture of US personnel more likely in the future, and hurts our image throught the moderate, sensible people of the world.
