Cut down or eliminate the caffiene in your diet, esp. after lunchtime. Sodas count too!
Get some exercise about 2 hrs before retiring. Stretches etc. are good.
Establish a bedtime routine, to put yourself in relaxing mode.
Turn off the computer and TV at least 2 hrs before bed, read or listen to calm music if you need to relax that way. The screen stimulates the brain.
Drink calming herbal teas like chamomile and linden (limeblossom).
Put a few drops of lavendar oil on your pillow, or a drop or two (no more!) on the back of your neck, when going to bed.
Take a hot shower or bath before bed.
Eat less meat and more vegetables and dairy products at night.
Try a melatonin supplement, it's a naturally ocurring sleep-inducing hormone but with age some people stop producing enough. You can take one or two 3 mg tablets when going to bed. No head-lag.
ONLY take sleeping pills as an absolute last resort...if you take too many they stop being effective...ask me how I know!

Music therapy and fragrance therapy both help. I use the former more often now as I'm going through a rough patch myself. Another thing that helps is exercise. Now, I can't advice you to go to the gym at night. But I wonder if it is possible for you to do that after office and before you take dinner. And if that isn't possible, perhaps you could look at the possibility of a brisk, half hour walk, after dinner around where you live. One final thing...one thing that definitely does not help is watching too much tv, drinking soda pop and drinking coffee. Sleep is really, really important, both for your body and your mind, and I wish you good luck.

You will think this is wierd but its a bit like the counting sheep theory. What I do is think of a subject such as countries of the world or types of fruit any thing and go through the alpabet in your head,, i.e A- Afganistan B belgium C croatia...... it takes your mind of the random thoughts and you have usually fallen asleep before z.
Oh and eating a banana 1 hour before bedtime

I've never had any trouble getting to sleep, it's more the getting up that I haven't mastered yet!
My Mum, however, often has bouts of insomnia, and she says the thing that works best is pretending that she's an extra in a film and she has to pretend she's dead. I know it sounds crazy, but it has really worked for her!
Good luck.

This is very difficult for you,and i myself have been in this terribly frustrating situation. Most of this has to do one,s lifestlye and the amount of stress you let in..stress is a big thing.
1)..write down on a bit of paper your worries and concerns..in bed before you drift off.
2)buy soem Lavender oil and sprinkle this on your pillow.
do not eat after 6pm,food can keep you awake and cut down on caffine..a stimulant for the brain and your bladder.
3)go to a natural "herbal"shop and see what is around..perhaps a walk juring the day too..it keeps stress at bay.
i hope i have been of help to you.
buy..from Devon.

Drink NO tea or coffee 3 hours before going to bed.
No takeaways, they require too much digestion
Milky drink like cocoa ovaltine etc and plain biscuits
Restful CD which can be bought on ebay, apparently they work in conjunction with what I have mentioned.
No beer, its more likely to make you go to loo in the middle of the nite.

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.

My advise is to download some smooth music and put it on your ipod or whatever you have lay on your back, but dont have the music too loud and just listen with your eyes closed. Stop worrying about how old your getting, your alive, your here, so be at peace. You will soon drop off.

Keep in mind that the actions of a few nutjobs does not equate to the mindset of all the citizens of the town. The Marines are not going anywhere and are better off allowing the nutjobs to act like 7 year olds while they take the high road.
