I read that the normal fare for the "El" and buses is $2, with transfers being 25 cents. However, when I use the online route calculator at http://tripsweb.rtachicago.com it tells me that a trip involving a bus and the "El" from an outer area of Chicago to downtown areas costs $4-$6, depending on where exactly my destination is.

So, what am I missing here? Is the online calculator not taking into account transfers only being 25 cents, or do you have to pay the full fare for the "El" and the bus separately if you use both of them on the same trip?

I live in West Palm Beach, FL right now and I HATE it...and i've been to Chicago probably 5 times and it is my absolute favorite place in the world...so i was thinking...time to move there :)
so that's my plan for the summer...and i just wanted some info from all you natives there. Average price for a studio/one bedroom? Worst parts of the city(so i don't look there)? Best place to look for a job? Should I sell my car? How much does the train cost to take everyday? I am planning a fly-drive holiday with my mother later this year. We are going to fly to Chicago, and then drive along the Little House trail, heading to South Dakota. We want to have a couple of days in Chicago before setting out on the road - any ideas for things we really must see and do? We are 34 and 64, so we're not into clubbing or shopping.
