For a city of its size, Chicago is remarkably clean. I've been to a lot of big cities and it made me appreciate how clean Chicago is when I got back. I've visited NYC a few times and because of the way the city is designed, there are piles of garbage sitting right in front of the houses and apartments! I mean big piles of plastic garbage bags waiting to be picked up by the garbage trucks (whenever that may be). How'd you like that to be the first thing you see when you get up in the morning and head out to work? No wonder New Yorkers are considered grumpy. And on the way to the airport, there were abandoned cars on the side of the express way, burned out cars with graffiti written on them. A mess. Even in Manhattan, in the bustling tourist district, there was garbage and bird crap and overflowing cans..

No, compared to other places, Chicago's main areas are pretty clean. Garbage pick up is done on an almost daily basis, you always see guys in orange and yellow vests cleaning up the sidewalks. They even have these little machines that guys drive down the sidewalks and clean up the cigarettes butts, etc. Now there are some other neighborhoods that are not so clean, that the city seem to be taking their sweet time to clean up, but that's a whole other story....

I am a frequent traveler to major cities all over the country and I can tell you that Chicago does the best job of keeping the downtown area clean. You can walk around and the sidewalks are swept and the litter is picked up. Plus the people of Chicago in general take great pride in their town.

Go Bears!

I have traveled all over the world and Chicago is by far the cleanest city I have ever been in. London is a great town but filthy. About 15 years ago State Street was a dump filled with riff raff and garbage. Nowadays you can walk anywhere down there and it is a great place to be without question.

I don't think Chicago is as dirty as other major cities. I have seen a few and I would feel a heck of a lot safer in Chicago then there.

We were talking about this at lunch the other day. All of my co-workers agreed that by big city standards, Chicago is very clean and well kept. This is especially true of the visitor/tourist areas such as the Loop, River North, Michigan Avenue and Grant Park.
The Mayor prides himself of the visual aspect of the city and beautifying the city, and expanding and improving the public park system to make it the best in the world is the legacy he is trying to leave.

I don't think so. We have had problems with our L/Metra platforms. They're getting older and need to be rebuilt and painted. also since our trains are up and go through areas where there are homes, sometimes the sight isn't too pleasent. personlly if there was a train is the back of my house, I wouldn't leave my windows open to show all of my clutter, not wash the back of my house, or keep the property looking shabby. but you find that in every city and there's nothing you can do about it.

downtown is a clean place and so are most of our tourist areas

overall - no. The city just down I-55 with the arch on the Big River; well that's a different story.

Chicago is really trying to clean herself up. She's doing a better job than NYC.

It is not dirty. The downtown "Loop" area is remarkably clean. It is a fantastic city with lots to do.
