I recommend Navy Pier. It's probally too cold for a boat ride- unless you are really hardy. it has lots of shops, commercial ones like Build-A-Bear, diveristy ones (lrish, hindu, ect), chicago pride one, ect. it has a Shakespear theather. the winter wonderland might still be open- if not something new should be opening up shortly. all of the indoor amusments are open as well.
I'd take a bus tour or just enjoy the free tolleys that take you around the whole city- and you can get off and look around if you see something you like.
Chicago has has open historic land marks. You'll have to see what time tours are. since school is in you might have a lot of kids running around though. We have good museums if thay isn't your style. The shed Aquarium is good, since even the free zoo will too cold to visit.
just walking around and switching trollies is a great way to spend a day. it would be better to visit the city when its warmer. and if you're willing to spend the cash, horse and carriage rides are nice to. especially if you like animals.
we're called the windy city due to our politics- but it is also a good literal description.
there is also a web site, forgot the exact link 'chicago amusments' if you want to search for something special (sports, music, ect)
I wish I knew what specials they have right now. I know winter wonderland is coming to a close or has closed. German fest is over. I'm sorry about that, after christmas and new years they start changing things.
Have fun, the city really has a lot to offer for everyone.
have fun.

It is going to be chilly, so you will want to spend some inside time.
I would hit Millennium Park and do some ice skating. Just down the street is the Art Institute - a world class museum. Then head up Michigan Ave to do a little shopping and stop in the Billy Goat (beneath the Wrigley Building) for a cheeseburger and some chips. If you are still into some museum time you could head to the Field Museum or Shedd Aquarium. Easy cab ride from Michigan Avenue. Or just stay on Michigan Ave and head up to the top of the Hancock building. I like the view better than the Sears Tower. If you are having dinner, then you should check out one of the world famous steakhouses (Gibsons or the Chop House) or if you are looking for something more casual try heading up to Lincoln Park for some Italian at Rose Angeli's. If you want to hit a trendy club style place, try Sushi SambaRio.

i'm from Detroit and that i've got traveled all over the U. S.. halfway is nearer to Downtown Chicago and this is easiest to get the prepare from O'Hare. you're at as lots possibility of crime in huge apple or la as you're in Chicago. clever human beings study maps formerly they bypass strolling so as that they at the instant are not combating to look for suggestion from centred visitor maps everywhere. Chicagoans are open and friendly and you would be able to ask everybody for instructions, yet frequently your inn will element you the the main suitable option way. I constantly memorize streets, questioning, "next i'm going to be crossing St. Clair," etc., so i understand the place i'm strolling. Chicago's laid out in a grid trend, corresponding to NYC. this is common to navigate. have exciting.

eat a hot dog, and keep an open mind, just bite in and try it! they are sooo good!! also go to the field museum, and leave a whole day for that it's HUGE!! it's really fun though, and normally there's a hot dog stand right outside, so you could do both. the Adler planetarium ( also right there ) is cool as well as the sea-life center that's right there too. i would also go to navy pier, it's pretty fun. you can get great pictures from the top of the Farris wheel ( it's good for people who aren't into rides, it's really slow and steady ) . bring extra cash for transportation too, because it's just not worth it to drive public transpo is excellent! have fun!!!

How long do you have there?
If it's just the day, I'd just wander the city, soaking up the hustle and bustle atmosphere. Go up the Sears Tower, the tallest building in the US.
Have a look at the Tourism Bureau site and familiarise yourself first with what you might like to see:-
