yes definately, a couple years back atornado went thru dallas texas and did major damage to the bigger buldings in the metro area. also same story in chattanooga tenn and denver colo. cities are a bad place to be in a big blow because the wind tends to ricochett off of the hard tall objects in addition to the other damages going on

In theory, yes. In likelyhood, no, because of the proximity to the lake (a tornado can't come from the East). A major tornado hit Plainfield IL, about 20 miles from Chicago, about 10 years ago and destroyed alot of that city, killing many people, but seeing that it is a smaller town, that tornado would have hit more populated area in Chicago, and killed thousands, but not destroy the majority of the citys infastructure. It would rip a good hole in it though. Watch the Histroy Channel, they have a show on what would happen if a major twister hit Dallas.

In theory, yes. There have been tornadoes in and around Chicago in the past, but none 'big enough to destroy downtown.' I don't know that it's ever happened, but we only have a few centuries of records out of millions of years of geologic history.

The answer is no. Tornadoes don't last long and cause a very strict area of damage restrained to their direct path and immediately surrounding area.

2 have struck near Chgo. in the past. One in Oaklawn, not too distant southern suburb, the other in Plainfield, about 35 mi SW of the Loop. Both were very destructive.
