Are the northern neighbourhoods and suburbs of Merseyside predominantly Everton country? Converesely, would one find more support for Liverpool FC in South Liverpool and the southern suburbs?
Before anyone says it, yes, I'm aware there are supporters of both clubs in all sections of Merseyside, but notice I said words like LARGELY and PREDOMINANTLY, not all or 100%.
Plus, as much as we tend to try and downplay these things nowadays, you can't argue there were often sectarian connectations to supporting a football club in years past, particularly in cities with large Irish connections. (i.e. Liverpool, Glasgow, and Manchester). It's no secret that not too long ago Catholics (largely of Irish ancestry) tended to favour Everton, while Protestants backed Liverpool FC. Historians tell us the once large Irish Catholic centres around Scotland Road largely moved northward to places like Bootle and Walton after the war. So is it fair to say North Liverpool is Blue and S. L'pool Red?
