It is part of the original Liverpool to Manchester railway (L&MR) the first intercity railway in the world. Variously its called the 'Edge Hill cutting' or the 'Wapping tunnel'. Lime street was not the original desination, the original passenger station was at Crown Street then the line went down the 'wapping tunnel' to the docks. Lime St was built later.

The gradients out of the Wapping Tunnel and the Edge Hill cutting were so severe that for many years trains had to be hauled up it to Edge Hill by cable connected to two large static steam engines because they did not have enough power to climb up unsupported. The cutting and tunnel were engineered by Robert Stevenson.
