Are the northern neighbourhoods and suburbs of Merseyside predominantly Everton country? Converesely, would one find more support for Liverpool FC in South Liverpool and the southern suburbs?

Before anyone says it, yes, I'm aware there are supporters of both clubs in all sections of Merseyside, but notice I said words like LARGELY and PREDOMINANTLY, not all or 100%.

Plus, as much as we tend to try and downplay these things nowadays, you can't argue there were often sectarian connectations to supporting a football club in years past, particularly in cities with large Irish connections. (i.e. Liverpool, Glasgow, and Manchester). It's no secret that not too long ago Catholics (largely of Irish ancestry) tended to favour Everton, while Protestants backed Liverpool FC. Historians tell us the once large Irish Catholic centres around Scotland Road largely moved northward to places like Bootle and Walton after the war. So is it fair to say North Liverpool is Blue and S. L'pool Red?

good question - ( yes ) that was the way of things before and there is much left of that as can be seen with celtic and rangers fans -

there would be similar patterns found if a comprehensive study were done today

so the team represents more than the region itself but religion along with national and cultural identity -

I don't think so, as you are aware loyalties cross family boundaries. My brother mother and sister are/where blues, my dad, other brother, and myself are reds.

Its an old saying that a mixed marriage in Liverpool is between a red and a blue, and is probably close to the truth.

I have heard this thing about religious loyalties, but as a red catholic I never had any problem going to the game in the 70's, even when the kop used to do a chant where catholics would shout Celtic, Protestants Rangers, which would gradually fade into a long soulful Liiivvveeeerrrpppooooollll. It always sounded 50/50 to me.

I think the slum clearances, and the councils determination to mix communities got rid of much if the bitterness, and myths that had persisted in each community when people found that their enemy didn't have two heads and where actually a human being. I have had work colleagues who where in the lodge and It never caused a problem with our friendship.

I don't believe there is any demographic spread of supporters, and I think this is a good thing for the city, you only have to look at Belfast and Glasgow to see how destructive that has been for them.

I live in South Liverpool and am not a football fan but if pushed I would and do say Everton. I am not of the Church of Rome. Certain of my family accused me of going "Redneck" or being a "left footer". However I noticed that if the father supported Everton the son would support Liverpool. Two brothers would support opposite teams. Some years ago there was an Everton/Liverpool cup final at Wembley. In spite of attempts by police to seperate the fans they went to London together toured London together watched the match together and came home together. They were very noisey as Scouser are probably had to much to drink One or two would have been silly and got arrested but the only blot was when the Met.police and Railway police attempted to cause trouble between the fans. I have found over a long period of time that Liverpool people tend to stick together come hell or high water

i think if you go back a few years, you may be partly, or largely, correct. but i would now strongly disagree with this. i am 25mins north of the city centre in merseyside. i live in a town with around 30,000 people, and i would say its about 70% red. obviously, this may not be consistent everywhere but it just shows...
also a point to note, i'm half irish and apart from my brothers and parents, the rest of my family all live in ireland itself. we have a very large family, as irish traditionally do, about 70% of us are protestant, but there's a few (30%?) catholics. ALL of them support liverpool (bar 2 who are chelsea!!)... so i'm unsure of your theory...

My mother, her father ,and brothers and sisters all supported Everton primarily because they were all born there (Haigh Street off Scotty Road...it had nothing to do with religion on their part...still doesn't. Whilst one of my uncles and his sons support Everton, his daughter supports Liverpool!
