Upon arrival in Britain, what are some tips in looking for a place to live?

I am planning a 7-day trip to London with wife and daughter in May 2007, and am looking for reasonably priced hotel accommodation in decent localities.
Can you please recommend some decent and safe hotels (suitable for a couple in their 50's and a 22 year old daughter from India) priced about 70 UKP per night for the three of us? What localities would you recommend I concentrate my search on?
The results on the net are quite mind-boggling.

I'm looking into a study abroad progam in England. I have some options in London but I'm not sure if I would want to go there. It's very international. Not that I don't like international people but I wanna experience a proper british experience. Does anyone know of any cities I should consider in England where I could get the british experience? Also, a place where jobs would be easy to find as well.

Help please!?
My boyfriend is flying with British Airway on Saturday. The flight is still operating, but he was told by BA today that he is likely to be delayed maybe for days at Heathrow because they'll have to fill in people who have been waiting for two days. So my boyfriend can't get on the plane even if it's still operating. If the airlines keep pushing everyone back like this, will it cause a chain of endless delays??? How are they going to fix that?

If you are on the US Yahoo Answers,UK questions come accross every once in a while. You see a lot of questions about directions like: "How do I get from Stoke-on-Trent to Leeds?" or "How do I get from Mumbles, in Wales, to Oxford?" The ones I realy enjoy are like the following "know any good pubs in Glasgow?" Really, it is just a curiosity because I don't see a lot of "locale" related questions in the US, or maybe I just don't notice them and I am just picking up on the exotic.
