I am thinking about going abroad. I live in the UK and I am fairly well travelled. I will be going for two weeks, no particular reason, just to doss around, meet people and see new things. I cannot make my mind up between China and the USA? I have not been to either but at some point will visit both. Which of the two do people think I should visit first?

Also, to make it easy to judge for the ten points. As both places end with an 'a', ten points to the person with the most a's in thier answer.

Thanks.

I have some time to spare in Jan/Feb and I am looking for somethings to do that is truely different. Something that I will really have a good time with but will also be rewarding in other ways. I have traveled afair bit and am used to the riggors or more unusual trips but I need new ideas.

Really thinking Africa or S. America because I havent been yet, but am open to all ideas.

Thanks and happy travels

What would the climate be like, what would it be called, how many people would live there, what language would they speak, what buildings, services would be there, etc. Put some thought into it!

I'd like to wear sandals because they're easy to slip off and on, but I've also heard it's possible to pick up someone's foot fungus from the floor. Anyone know how likely that is to occur?

Please can someone give an explanation of the hotel star system (particularly Europe's)? I know it's based on facilities, but what facilities does a hotel have to have to attain each star?

I don't check baggage, so wondering if all you bright minds out there can give me some ideas for items or brands that can be carried on. For example, those face cleanser cloths instead of liquid cleanser, sanitizer wipes instead of gel sanitizer...things along those lines. Is there any shampoo that comes in a bar?

Both are personalised accomodation.. and involve common facilities like a common dining hall, maid services etc.. also common decor .. soem boutique hotels are owned by coporate houses for use as guest houses for their own clients/employees ......so is there any difference? Is it just abt short stay versus long stay, or is there anything else?
Do they both have help desks and lobbies?

London is flooded with tourists all year round, but in the summer it is a nightmare as they just get in the way all the time, they may have all the time in the world but some people don't, I make sure that if I am visiting a new place I don't get in the way of the people that live there, and I respect their towns instead of throwing litter around, tourists drive me mad!!!

There are about 15 of us altogether. 6 of us are under 16 (two are babies under 2 years). The rest of us range from about 20 to 60. Everyone in my family is claiming to be broke and yet they wanna go abroad.

Can anyone recommend a tour operator who could help us with this? Or has anyone successfully organised a big holiday like this? Where did you go and who did you book with?

I personally think we should stick to the UK a) because of the costs and b) cos of increased airport security checks, but if there are any affordable destinations abroad that would be cool.

But:

1) accomodation/destination MUST be family friendly with lots of things for kids to do
2) accomodation should be clean
3) If we go abroad it should be a sunnyish destination e.g. Spain.
