Please can someone give an explanation of the hotel star system (particularly Europe's)? I know it's based on facilities, but what facilities does a hotel have to have to attain each star?

Quite simply, the more Stars, the higher the overall level of quality you can expect to find. Establisments at higher rating levels also have to meet some additional requirements for facilities.

Here is a list that I made. I am a big traveler and all so...

1 Star- Never think about going to one. Don't expect much above a motel 9. Usually no services for you. May or may not have basic cable.

2 Stars- Think about going to one incase of an emergancy. Bassicly the same as a 1 star, usualy with cable, and a few services.

3 Stars- Expect a normal hotel. Television, average services available. Pools also. Some hotels that are 3 stars are Comfort Inns, Holiday Inns, Days Inns, ect.

4 Stars- Expect above average services. Room cleaning everyday, no matter what, chocolates on the bed, 1 or2 pools.

5 Stars- Go here. Expect the best services available. Large lobbys, go facilites, room service. Usually in very popular areas.

Resorts- Resorts you should pick over hotels. Much better. I go to these all the time.
-------------------------------------------------

I also found that All-Inclusave hotels usually get an automatic 5 star rating. All Inclusave means most additional services are free, like eating at a resturant or buffet. I go to these most of the time. They are quite hard to find in the USA...

You have a full explanation of the system of UK star rating. Europe is different. It is the cost that rates some of them. Others like UK its facilities. However check every hotel on line before you go. Some 1* in Europe have better facilities than 4* in UK.

1 * - U can take cheap prostitute and can stay there for 30 mins and the only facility is a towel
2 * - U can spend the night there with ur prostitute and they provide u with a towel, some soap and a a clean sheet on the bed.
3 * - U go there when having an affair. They provide a towel, soap, air conditioning (which doesn't work most of the time) and a bottle of champagne, how marvelous. There's also a tv set in case u have anough of sex.
4 * - it's for businessmen, so u have minibar, air conditioning, pay-tv,and u take there high class russian prostitutes. It's paid by your company and u just have to pay for the girls.
5 *- It's for rich arab with loads of prostitutes. Stay away!.

I recently read that they get ratings according to where they have air conditioning, smoking and non smoking rooms, etc.
Luxurious facilities with a lot of perks like spas, gyms, restaurants, etc. get higher ratings that gives them permission to charge a lot more per night.

The English Tourist Council inspects hotels and gives them a rating according to the UK's national rating scheme. There are two parts to the ratings.
Serviced Accommodation: Stars -
Star ratings symbolise the level of service, range of facilities and quality of guest care that you can expect. Hotels are required to meet progressively higher standards as they move up the scale from one to five Stars.

The gradings are: One star: Practical accommodation with a limited range of facilities and services, but a high standard of cleanliness throughout. Restaurant/eating area. 75% of bedrooms will have en-suite or private facilities.

Two stars: Better equipped bedrooms, all with ensuite/private bathroom and a colour TV. A lift is normally available.

Three stars: Higher standard of services and facilities including larger public areas and bedrooms, a receptionist, room service, laundry.

Four stars: Accommodation offering superior comfort and quality; all bedrooms with en-suite bath, fitted overhead shower and WC. Spacious and well appointed public areas. More emphasis on food and drink. Room service of all meals and 24 hour drinks, refreshments and snacks. Dry cleaning service available. Excellent customer service.

Five stars: A spacious, luxurious establishment offering you the highest international quality of accommodation, facilities, services and cuisine. There will be a range of extra facilities. You will feel very well cared for by professional, attentive staff providing flawless guest services. Serviced

Accommodation: Diamonds -

Diamond ratings for Guest Accommodation reflect visitor expectations of this sector, where quality is seen as more important than facilities and services. As a result Guest Accommodation is required to meet progressively higher standards of quality and guest care as they move up the scale from one to five Diamonds.

One diamond Diamond Guest Accommodation: clean and comfortable accommodation, providing breakfast and helpful service.

Two Diamond Guest Accommodation: An increased level of quality and comfort, with greater emphasis on guest care.

Three Diamond Guest Accommodation: Well maintained, practical decor, a good choice of breakfast dishes, a higher degree of customer care and at least 40% of the bedrooms will have private or ensuite bathrooms.

Four Diamond Guest Accommodation: An even higher level of quality and comfort. Good level of customer care.

Five Diamond Guest Accommodation: Excellent quality in furnishing and rooms. At least 80% of bedrooms will have ensuite/private bathrooms. Excellent levels of customer care..

hope this helps
