I'd like to wear sandals because they're easy to slip off and on, but I've also heard it's possible to pick up someone's foot fungus from the floor. Anyone know how likely that is to occur?

Maybe you should go check out your airport, and see just how many people are walking around barefoot, then you can estimate the chances of getting a foot fungus :)
