I have some time to spare in Jan/Feb and I am looking for somethings to do that is truely different. Something that I will really have a good time with but will also be rewarding in other ways. I have traveled afair bit and am used to the riggors or more unusual trips but I need new ideas.
Really thinking Africa or S. America because I havent been yet, but am open to all ideas.

Go visit Barrow Alaska, stay at the Top of the World Hotel and take their city tour. I went in April one year and the temp. was -20 and the wind chill was -58. That was spring. That will be truly different. The Northern Lights will be stunning that time of year. Take the Alaska RR from Anchorage to Fairbanks through Denali. Go to Homer. Well, you get the idea.

i lived in panama for 3 years and it was interesting, but the best part was the cheap travel to all the other countries.do some island hopping off the coast of costa rica and panama. the waves are pretty good, lots of women, cheap booze. of course you want to be there for carnival season (end of feb). rio was good, but i found that the smaller countries were much better. once again, you can stay in the costa area and have a great time.

if i had the time, i'd probably go to Japan or Korea to study the language.. tour the place and get to know the people...
my mom LOVES South Africa.. I'm not sure of the place but Johanesburg is her favorite spot..
