I have 4 children, ages 17, 14, 13, and 10. We will be traveling spring, '08. Is this a good time to go to Italy? Should we book a trip with a travel agency, like a guided tour, or is there a better way to book things separately, like a "do it at your own pace?" I do not want to be overbooked like the guided tours tend to be, with having so many kids, but I do want to see at least Rome, Florence, Venice, and Capri, or some ocean. I am worried that we could not do it on our own, without the help of a guided tour. But the tours tend to be so fast paced, and boring. I want this to be an amazing trip, that we will never forget. And fun yet educational for the kids. Thank you for your answers to anyone who has done a trip like this!

.. secondly, what is the best way to travel between Naples centre and Vesuvius? Taxi? Comfortable bus?

Thirdly, I would prob visit Vesuvios first, then Pompeii.. How do you travel between Pompeii and Vesuvius? Is there a bus service or something?

Forthly.. returning back to Vesuvios... local buses or something (again)?

Thanks!

Me and my girlfriend are intending to to have a short break to Naples visiting Pompeii, mount Vesuvius, and then Capri. Perhaps 1-2 days in Naples area for Pompeii and Vesuvius, and then around 2-3 days in Capri.

Does anyone have any tips on the easiest way of travelling between these destinations.. I don't speak any Italian!

Thanks.

Okay, here is a list of places I want to visit while in Rome:

I want to take a day trip to Pompeii
The Colosseum
Arch of Constantine
St. Peter's Basilica
The Vatican museums
Catacombs (haven't decided which yet...I guess the Catacombs of St. Callixtus)
The Trevi fountain
Circus Maximus
The Pantheon
Church of St. Peter in Chains
Capitoline Museum
The Roman Forum
Baths of Caracella
Villa Borghese
Mamertine Prison
The Victor Emanuel Monument (I hear that Italians dislike this landmark because it is overly-ornate...is that true?)

I know that I'll want to spend more time in some of these places than others...but, I want to visit them all. I'll be in Rome for 8 days (I know, not much time but it's all I could afford) and want to see them all. So, how should I schedule my time? Thanks!

my fiance and i are travelling to Rome for the 1st time in August - v.exciting! we arrive at Fiumicino airport about lunch time and we need a cheap way to get to our hotel - Castello della Castelluccia. we know we can get the train but i am a bit apprehensive seeing as it is our 1st time in Rome and i am worried that we will get lost!! how easy is it to navigate the trains (we know no italian but i have brought an italian phrasebook to help us!) and would you think this an ok way to get to our hotel? we dont want to spend a lot of money on a taxi - we are on a budget and want plenty for eating out and sight seeing! also, how much would the train fare be roughly and how long the journey? also, ive read that shorts arent acceptable in the city centre - is this correct and should we not wear shorts?! any other tips would be greatly appreciated too! thank you so much to anyone who replies!

I'm going there soon, arriving at about 10.00pm with a heavy suitcase and a tired girlfriend! What's the best way to get to Lido? Never been there before and don't speak any Italian.
Which ferry? Do they run late in evening? Direct, or have to change somewhere? Length of journey? Getting tickets?
Please give me an idiot's guide!

By 'fun and authentic things' in mean things which are unique to that particular city.

ie BARCELONA (visit Sagrada Famillia, ride on the cable car, ascend the heights of Tibidabo, go sightseeing in the Exiemple, peruse the trophy room of the Nou Camp, party on Las Ramblas etc)

But what can I do in Rome which is unique to Rome?
