Italians are wonderful. Many if not most speak English, and those that don't have at least a broken English for tourists. It would be nice if you pick up a few phrases just to be polite but you won't have to.

I went to Italy this summer and I don't speak Italian. Pretty much everyone understood me. If you're staying in any big tourist spots you'll be just fine. Have fun! Italy is beautiful!

if an italian came here and spoke italian would he have any problems anywhere? its funny how in the us when people speak other languages they get the "this is america we speak english here" but yet when they travel they expect people to speak english there too... Thankfully italians are not ingnorant and speak differnet languages.. and if they dont they have the manners and try to understand them!
