I've only done the northern parts, and was there three weeks. I started in Rome and stayed at the Hotel Raphael it gets my highest recommendation, perfect location and has the sweetest roof top dining. I did Nero's palace, Vatican (remember long pants, no tank tops) Then rented a Volvo x-country and drove to Florence, can't remember the hotel but I could see the Ponte Vecchio and if you only do one city that's the one. Remember to get your hotel to do all the museum ticketing for you and tip the conceirge always for it (you won't have to wait in any long lines).
Did Pisa, and Lucca on my way to Venice and both are worth a day. In Venice I stayed at the Cipriani which was real expensive, but I'm glad I stayed there. Venice is not my favorite city though, have a bellini, buy some glass or masks (but don't over pay), see the real Guggenheim and after a couple of days move on.
Then went to Bellagio and stayed at the Gran Hotel, most relaxing place, on my way stopped in Verona, which has the second largest ancient arena. Hell of a drive though, if you go you'll see, did Sirmione on my way to my last stop Milan. Stayed at the Four Seasons, shopped big and did the standard sight seeing.
No matter where you go, you'll love it, and they don't hate Americans, that's total BS. My advice and it's tough with the current exchange rate, but don't bring many clothes or shoes, just buy them there. If anything cut back on the dining budget because you can get great food at wine in the little hole in the plaza places, and watch out for the grappa, I got seriously hammered first night, it's sneaky, big mistake, but that was my only ugly American moment. I'd also spend more time in Rome than the 4 days which was really 3 with the jet lag.

bypass to Italy,or Azerbaijan. do not bypass to France. I wen there in December.i don't get those people. So high priced, and not something to bypass to, Eiffel tower and Louvre. in case you opt for Italy, you have plenty place to bypass. persist with Rome,Milano..
