My friends and i are going on holidays, the choice is either the snow or the beach. It's winter but i hate the cold and i'd rather go to the beach, is there a happy medium? I love surfing and own a wetsuit so the cold is not an issue, where should we go?

We are moving to Sydney from Brooklyn (I asked before). I know we won't really decide before we get there and experience the neighborhoods- but we could use some help narrowing down. Funky but safe, diverse and liberal, great , fresh food and shops, maybe older buildings that have been modernized inside...I know Melbourne was mentioned but we're already committed. Want to live near beach but understand that many city beaches are not dog-friendly, so we'd need to drive anyways. Husband will work in CBD, wife TBA. I truly appreciate all comments... and even like the healthy Sydney/Melbourne rivalry! Everything helps, as we have no friends there yet...thanks.

I am planning to live in Syndey for two years for work. I am planning to take public transportation during my stay there or walk to places nearby. I would like to live near work or be able to travel to work quickly. I will be working in the Darling Harbour area. I would like a place that has great sites and fresh markets/groceries. I'm not a party girl and don't really go clubbing, so I quiet area is preferred. However, I am a huge beach volleyball player, so would like a place by the beach if possible.

During my stay, I would also like to see other places in Australia and would like to know if I would require a car in the long term or if I could get by on train or bus to see other places.

For those of you who didn't hear, former Prime Minister Paul Keating recently suggested that Sydney should become the capital city of Australia. He also suggested a grand, iconic building should be built on Garden Island to be the New New Parliament House (since Canberra already has its own New Parliament House).

Here is the link: http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/move-parliament-to-sydney-keating/2007/05/23/1179601494647.html

What do you think of this idea?

Anyone can comment, but could non-Australians please not put any dumb answers like "But I thought Sydney was the capital"...Canberra is the capital city of Australia, Sydney has never been the capital city.

I plan on moving to Australia for school next year and cannot decide where i want to go... I wont have a car so i prefer a city that is not too hard to get around but is still exciting to live in... I am considering Gold Coast, Brisbane, or Wollongong but have also heard good things about Perth. Any suggestions ?????

We will be staying in Sydney (Hyde Park) this October and wondered if anyone can recommend some interesting days out? Would probably use boat, train or coach rather than car hire?
Cheers
