My husband and I will be traveling to Australia for only about 5 days. There are a lot of places we want to go but have no idea how to get to any of them! Just wondering if theres is a bus system there or should we rent a car?

I wouldn't bother renting a car in Sydney for just a few days - especially if you are not use to high volume traffic.
There is abundance of tour buses/coaches, and the public transport system.

Take a look at these sites:::::

You can buy a day ticket which gives you unlimited access to all trains, government buses and most ferries. Get on and off where you choose. There is a red Explorer bus that travels a circuit round most of the places of note near the city. Again buy a ticket and get on or off as you choose.

There are some wonderful walks in Sydney if you enjoy walking. I would recommend two particularly:
Observatory Hill and the Rocks. Start at Circular Quay and walk up to George St past the old cottage. Walk up Argyle St through the Argyle Cut to the Garrison Church then cross the road to the stairs and walk up to the top of Observatory Hill. After the Observatory, follow the road down the hill and cross the main road to the Lord Nelson Hotel. Walk back towards the Garrison Church, turn left to the Hero of Waterloo Hotel. (You have now had a drink in Sydneys two oldest pubs). Follow the road down to the Bridge and walk back along George St to the Quay.
The other walk starts under the Bridge at Dawes Point and follows the shore past the Overseas Passenger Terminal. the Museum of Contemporary Art, Circular Quay, the Opera House, the Botanic Gardens and ends at Mrs Macquarie's Chair.

There are many more but those two are particularly good on a fine day. Enjoy your visit.

To add to all the info above, I checked Travelocity. A one way from Seattle to Sydney on 6/12/2007 is, at it's cheapest there, $1347. There are three, all United, with a change over in San Francisco. They vary in length from roughly 18-22 hours total trip time. The departure times are 3:20 PM, 5:21 PM & 7:25 PM. Apparently, they all end up filtering into the second flight as the arrival times for all three are listed at 6:25 AM. On Expedia, I found better deals. There's an Air NZ flight on the same day above for $1020. It has twoconnections though: one in San Francisco & one in Auckland, NZ. Total travel time around 20 hours. Leaves at 5:21 AM & arrives at 8:30 AM. Also on Expedia is an Air Canada flight that goes to Vancouver, then straight to Sydney. It's $1226. Total travel time is about 20 hours. Leaves at 3:35 PM, arrives at 6:30 AM. Expedia also has a number of Qantas flights at $1320. 2008 is a ways away yet. A lot could change, especially with volatility in the airline market.

You can see a LOT of Sydney in five days using public transport, which is extremely affordable. There are also a multitude of tour operators which do extensive day tours during which you can really get a good idea of what Sydney is like.

Sydney is great to drive around if you have a good map and avoid the peak hours at either end of the day which turn the city into a giant car park, so hiring a car to negotiate the sights really depends on how much of your holiday you want to spend in traffic.

If you are staying in Sydney's central area you can walk everywhere, and the walking is pleasant and interesting. Beyond the CBD, however, you will need to use transport to get to most places! Most of the city rail stations will take you easily to desitinations further out, and the rail system itself is quite extensive:

Very affordable and accessible 'quick tours' can include trips around the Harbour and waterways aboard a Ferry or Cat:

http://www.sydneyferries.info/

There is also a bus network:

http://www.sydneybuses.info/

plus a tram (light rail) service and a monorail:

http://www.metromonorail.com.au/

The goevrnment networks (rail, bus and ferry) have ticket packages which allow you to travel on all systems, but you must pre-pay for all tickets. You cannot buy tickets on board.

Hope you have a wonderful holiday! :-)

There is a good bus system...also trains that can get you up and down the coast. If you rent a car don't forget you'll be driving on the "wrong" side of the road and in Sydney proper this is extremely hazardous. I did it and spent half the time lost. The local airlines like virgin blue have very cheap flights to many destinations throughout the country. Have fun!

I suggest renting a car
Train and bus system is quite good but a rental car would be a better option to maximise your five days
For travelling within the city - zoo, museum, aquarium etc., I suggest a combination of bus, train and ferry (and not the car)
