I have an opportunity to take a job in New Zealand and my husband, a retired police SRT (aka SWAT or Special Ops) officer, is worried about New Zealand's gun laws (we would be coming from the US).
Can anyone give me a useful summary of the laws? My internet research has not been effective because I can only find small pieces of information, and what I've found seems to boil down to:
1. No pistols of any sort.
2. Shotguns are OK, so are some rifles but AK-type rifles or what they call "assault" configuaration in the US is illegal in New Zealand.
3. You must be licensed and registered to own weapons.
4. You may only shoot them at designated "shooting clubs".
5. For new residents there is a waiting period before they are allowed to own any weapon.
Can anyone help me out, or point me to a website where the gun laws are concisely written? Serious responses only please, and thanks for your help.
