It took about 12-13 hours from London Heathrow To Kuala Lumper in Malaysia and then another 8 hours to Melbourne (we were flying over Australia for 3 hours), with Malaysian Airlines. It depends on the Airline as to where your stop over is (but there is always at least one stopover, usually in Asia). Go with Singapore Airlines or Quantas and you will end up having a stop in Singapore for example, Virgin stops off in Hong Kong. Another option is to fly to the USA (probably California) and then direct to Australia (that takes about 25 hours or so from Western Europe).
To find out why not do a search on flights to where ever in Australia you want to go to from where ever you are...
We flew over Europe, Cyprus, Isreal, Saudia Arabia, UAE, India, Malaysia, Indonisia on the way over. We took a more northerly route home. Over India and over Iran (the mountains were amazing to look at). It all really made me appriciate how green my part of Europe is!!
