What I think about America is that there is poverty, bad weather conditions, a lot of teenage pregnancy in some parts and families of America because even if the media shows us only the best parts of America people like Oprah and reading tell you more about the country that thinks it all. But guys I guess we need to educate ourselves more about these things

and that people here walk around naked and are not educated? All the celebrities of America always get surprised when they get here. The English are much better. is it ignorance?

Back in the 80's and early 90's, there was an entire slew of these movies. They all had their hearts in the right place, but unfortunately, the end result was putting the Marxist criminal Mandela, and the rest of the evil, backward criminals of the ANC in power.
Forever.
Most of these movies were condescending, Hollywoodized versions of South Africa and South Africans, but some were pretty good. For my money, the best was 'Cry Freedom' with Denzel Washington. Saw that in Hillbrow in '90, and despite initial tredpidation, came away most impressed with Attenborough's movie.
They nailed it. Denzel Washington looked and sounded like a black man from the townships, Kevin Kline looked and sounded like a middle class, English speaking white South African and Attenborough's movie perfectly depicted SA in the 70's.
All you new generation SA's want to know what it was like back then, check out this movie.

Notice that now blacks are destroying the country, no one's making movies about it.

Whenever I watch the news, I see Arab people throwing their sandals at things. If they want to do damage, they should throw rocks. Why sandals?

hey, i'm here in South Africa, Pinetown to be specific. I've been here for two months and am bored out of my mind!!! I don't go out at night because the way natives tell it: being robbed or raped is inevitable. Any suggestions on what to do for fun? or how to go about meeting people (college age to 27) in the Pinetown/Durban area?

I think 'Fiela se kind' was good, but 'Tsotsi' was great. My mom thinks 'Plekkie in die Son' was the best, but my dad disagrees and puts his money on 'Cry, the Beloved Country'. I love the Schuster movies, but think that 'The Gods Must Be Crazy' was better. How about you? What do you think?

Saw that in Hillbrow in '89. Movies had just been integrated, and it was ironically the first flick I saw with black people in the theater.

Of all the anti-apartheid movies, this had to be the most idiotic. I had a black dude sitting behind me, and he couldn't stop laughing, along with the rest of the mixed audience.

Made me realise how American Indians must have felt sitting through all those early Westerns.

Another fun question, you guys. No need to argue. Shaka was a good leader, but to the AWB so was Eugène Terre'Blanche. And if you think you would make a good leader...tell us why!

Please excuse my total ignorance here. I realise we are subjected to generally negative images in the media, and that as a tourist destination Israel may be safe, but I'm not taking chances.

If we avoid the areas where there are outbreaks of violence, will it be ok?
